Empath Home Health Physical Therapist April Perryman never brings preconceptions with her when she visits a new client. Her fresh perspective resulted in considerable benefits for one recent client and his family and caregiver.
The client suffered a hip fracture and heel wound in a fall. He also had a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, making it difficult for his caregiver to communicate with him. During her initial evaluation, though, April discovered the client had been misdiagnosed. He actually suffered from a traumatic brain injury, not Alzheimer’s.
Armed with that knowledge, April helped the caregiver and family improve their approach to communication so the client could understand instructions. April looked beyond the diagnosis to see the whole person, resulting in an immediate improvement in the quality of life for the client, family and caregiver.
