I remember visiting a dear soul at her bedside a week before she died. She was a person of deep faith and we had enjoyed many conversations as she came to terms with her death and looked back over her life. But that morning when I came to see her, she seemed particularly peaceful and so fully present. As soon as I sat down, she looked into my eyes and said, “Jim, I have something very important to tell you, and I want you to listen with your heart. Can you do that?” I settled in and gave her my whole attention, and she paused and said, “Don’t postpone your joy. Take every opportunity to let it bubble up within you. Don’t wait until everything is going right, because that day will never come. Be happy now.”
So, even when we struggle, even when we face challenges that leave us breathless and tired, may we throw the doors of our hearts wide open and welcome the joy at every opportunity.
